The DIN EN ISO 20345 and DIN EN ISO 20347 standards are European standards that define specific requirements for safety shoes and occupational footwear to ensure the safety and protection of wearers in the workplace. The 2012 versions of the standards were revised and published in June 2022 as DIN EN ISO 20345:2022 and EN ISO 20347:2022. The updated standards came into force on 30 March 2023 and have been valid since then. We give you an overview of the changes that have been made:

Safety classes

The following protection classes have been newly introduced and differ from the current protection classes due to their permanent waterproofness:

Old standardNew standard
O2 O6 (O2 + permanently waterproof)
O3 O7 (O3 + permanently waterproof)
S2 S6 (S2 + permanently waterproof)
S3 S7 (S3 + permanently waterproof)

Enclosed you will find an overview of all protection classes and abbreviations:

Penetration Protection

The type of penetration protection will be categorised more precisely in future:

  • Penetration-resistant steel sole (no further labelling): S1P, S3, S7
  • Penetration-resistant textile sole for test nail 4.5 mm (+ labelling "L"): S1PL, S3L, S7L
  • Penetration-resistant textile sole for test nail 3 mm (+ labelling "S"): S1PS, S3S, S7S

Waterproofness

The former additional requirement ‘WR’ (= Water Resistant) will in future be covered by protection classes O6, O7, S6 and S7:

  • O6 = O2 + permanently waterproof
  • O7 = O3 + permanently waterproof
  • S6 = S2 + permanently waterproof
  • S7 = S3 + permanently waterproof

Slip resistance

The basic slip resistance (formerly SRA) on ceramic tiles with cleaning agents is now a base requirement and is no longer labelled separately. It is included from protection classes OB and SB.

Additional higher slip resistance with glycerine on ceramic tiles will be labelled ‘SR’ (= Slip Resistant) in future.

The designations ‘SRA’, ‘SRB’ and ‘SRC’ are no longer used. The test for steel floors with glycerine (formerly SRC) has been abolished.

Fuel resistance

The fuel resistance of an outsole is now always labelled ‘FO’ (= Fuel and Oil Resistant) as a purely additional requirement and is no longer included from protection class S1.
